PALAD Applauds President Biden for Signing Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill

Thursday, May 20 — President Biden signed Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Bill into law. The bill was introduced by Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y) and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and addresses issues such as the underreporting of incidents and crimes as well as the lack of access and cross-cultural understanding in legal proceedings. Governor Newsom presented his California Comeback Plan, the biggest economic recovery plan in California history, that includes Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) support services following the rise of Anti-Asian hate crimes over the past year.

California is proud to be home to 1/3 of the nation's AAPI community. However, the pandemic has put a magnifying glass to longstanding issues of economic justice, health equity, and personal safety faced by the AAPI community.

To protect the community from xenophobia and support many of the AAPI-owned businesses, Governor Newsom's Comeback Plan includes:

Doubling down on protecting AAPI communities against hate crimesSupporting small businesses with the largest state tax cut in history, along with $4 billion in small business relief grantsImproving California's health care systems by expanding language access services and providing Medi-Cal to all Californias 60+
