Fil-Ams Among The Remarkable And Famous, Part 55

Filipinos have been in the United States since the 16th century, yet many of their stories remain untold. For the past year, Positively Filipino has been running a series on notable Filipino Americans who have made their marks in this country. There are hundreds, or maybe even thousands more, that need to be added to this story, and we need your help. If you know of a Filipino American who deserves to be included in this line-up, please send us their names and any supporting documents you may have to pfpublisher@yahoo.com. For now, we are including only those who are currently active and visible in the media and the community, regardless of their religious, sexual or political orientation. Thank you.

When the pandemic started her lonely work-from-home life in 2020, Abi Balingit channeled all her energy into the one thing that brought her joy: baking. In her tiny, dimly lit, shared kitchen, she produced hundreds of pasalubong (souvenir) boxes filled with creative treats that blended the Filipino and Western-style baked goods she grew up with. She’d sell out within hours each time, donating the proceeds to support people in need in her community. Her favorite dessert recipes are now in a baking book called, Mayumu (which means “sweet”) and includes never-before-seen dishes like Adobo Chocolate Chip Cookie, Strawberry Shortcake Sapin-Sapin, Ube Macapuno Molten Lava Cake, Matcha Pastillas, Melon Chicharron Crumble, and Halo-Halo Baked Alaska. Accompanying essays trace Abi’s heritage and self-discovery introducing the flavors and experiences that have shaped her life, from her parents’ birthplace in Pampanga, Philippines to California where she grew up and went to school, and now her new home in Brooklyn, New York.

Her discipline favors art and technique over the traditional sparring that fans might see during an Olympic Games. It is a showcase of precision, accuracy, and mental focus. “I like the dynamics of it,” she explained referring to poomsae. “Even though sparring is very strategic, to poomsae, there is an art. There is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. And I think whoever trains harder, it shows on the mat.” A two-time US National Champion, Reclusado is in her second year at Princeton University where she hopes to earn her degree while still competing for Team USA.
