Opening of “Bagong Liwanag 2” Baybayin Tattoo Exhibit at the PH Consulate, 9 May 2024

In celebration this May of National Heritage Month in the Philippines and Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in the United States, the Philippine Consulate General and Sentro Rizal San Francisco invite you to the opening of the solo exhibition of Bay Area-based Filipino tattoo artist Jeff Maronilla-Seva Quintano titled, “Bagong Liwanag 2: Baybayin Tattoos” on 9 May 2024, 5:30 p.m., at the Kalayaan Hall, Philippine Center, 447 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California 94108 (behind Union Square).

The “Bagong Liwanag” (“New Light”) exhibition, which was first mounted at the San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center (Sentro Filipino) last January 2024, aims to shine a positive light on tattooing and its pivotal role in the revival of baybayin, one of the ancient scripts of the Philippines. It also highlights a people's effort to connect to their Filipino roots and represent their culture in America.

The exhibition launch will feature remarks by Philippine Consul General Neil Ferrer, and a premiere of Quintano’s documentary on baybayin tattoo art.

This exhibition will run at the Philippine Center’s Kalayaan Hall until 31 May 2024—with a closing event that will feature a screening of the documentary “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Mambabatok” (“The Woman Behind the Tattooist”), featuring renowned Kalinga tattoo artist Whang-od.
