[Webinar Video] Filipina Power Warriors in the Pandemic Front Line

Last Monday, March 23, Positively Filipino held a panel of five outstanding Filipinas who share their experiences in the war against Covid-19.

Speakers:

Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono is a trauma surgeon and former Director of the Washington State covid response management team. As the former CEO and director of the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Vice Admiral (Dr.) Bono led a joint, integrated combat support agency that enabled all branches of the U.S. military – Army, Navy, and Air Force – medical services to provide health care services to combatant commands. She is now the Chief  Health Officer of Viking Cruises.

Dr. Diana Ranoa, holds a doctorate in Microbiology at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign where she is currently a Research Fellow at the Carle Woese Institute for Genomic Biology and the Department of Chemistry. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, she was the Lead Researcher/Supervisor for the Covid-19 Diagnostic Testing at the university. The saliva-based test is now being used by the Philippine Red Cross. 

Dr. Marel Ver is a bariatric/trauma surgeon at Pali Momi Medical Center where she holds many leadership positions including Division Chief of General Surgery, and Trauma Medical Director, developing Pali Momi into a Level 3 Trauma Center. She is currently the President of the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii (PMAH), an organization that is actively visible during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Mary Joy Garcia-Dia is the President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America with over 5,000+ members and 52 chapters all across the US. She has a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Case Western Reserve University.  She currently serves as a member of the American Nurses Association’s National Commission Addressing Racism in Nursing.

Margaret Lapiz, a former EVP of Kaiser Permanente, she co-founded Under One Roof, a social impact venture focused on advancing a collaborative, future-oriented, coordinated approach to health and wellbeing in farmworker and rural communities. In Spring 2020, she was tapped to lead the COVID-19 response and recovery efforts for Santa Cruz County, California.
