People To Watch: Michael C. Martinez

For the first time in the history of Philippine sports and the Winter Olympics, a Filipino will compete in the men's solo ice skating event.

Michael C. Martinez, 17, of Muntinlupa qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, when he placed seventh at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany in September.

Martinez, who learned to ice skate at the rinks of SM malls, started joining international competitions in 2008. He is the first Filipino to successfully perform a triple axle in a competition.
