The longest-running festival of films from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora, FACINE launches its 1st cineSuri: Critical Essay Writing Competition on Filipino Cinema and
SALIN-CINE: Isang Pagtutunghay sa Larangan ng Pagsalin sa Pelikulang Filipino [Translating Film: An Introductory Look at the Art and Practice of Subtitling/Translation in Filipino Film]
The festival organized by the Filipino Arts & Cinema International and co-sponsored by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, PAWA, the Filipino American Center at San Francisco Main Library, The Filipino Channel (TFC) and inquirer.net, opens with the Short Films competition on October 18 at the San Francisco Main Library, and the Main Competition on October 19-21 at the Roxie Theater, 3117 – 16th Street, San Francisco.
The annual festival, the longest-running event in the US, has been the premier showcase of new works and Filipino film classics in the United States for the past 25 years. It is organized by FACINE, a not-for-profit media arts organization based in San Francisco that aims to advance the interests of cinemas from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora.
This year’s festival highlights include juried competition among 9 feature-length and 39 short films and the launching of two new programs: cineSuri: Critical Essay Writing on Filipino Cinema and SALIN-CINE: Isang Pagtutunghay sa Larangan ng Pagsalin sa Pelikulang Filipino [Translating Film: An Introductory Look at the Art and Practice of Subtitling/Translation in Filipino Film which constitute FACINE’s three-year celebration of the Centenary of Filipino Cinema, 2017-2019.
FACINE 25 roster of festival honorees include Gawad Gintong Ani [gold harvest], a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award to multi-media actor and performer, the late Bernardo Bernardo, the Gawad Pilakula [silver honors], an award for a Filipino film artist in diaspora, to filmmaker H.P. Mendoza, Gawad Lingap SIning [art-nurturing award] to ANIMAHENASYON, the annual animation film festival in the Philippines and the Gawad Sulong, Sine [forward, film] to archivist, critic and film preservationist, Jojo de Vera
Community partners include FAAE/Pistahan, the San Francisco Philippine Consulate, Marriott Hotel-Union Square, Isomer Media, Positively Filipino, the International Southeast Asian Film Festival and UNDSCVRD-SF.
A wide array of new works by filmmakers from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora on varying subjects and genre will be presented in different programs.
