[PARTNER] FACINE 24 Celebrates a Century of Filipino Films

San Francisco, September 18, 2017 – FACINE/24, the 24thAnnual Filipino international Cine Festival opens with Lawrence Fajardo’s IMBISIBOL [invisible], a powerful drama on undocumented Filipino workers in Japan on October 20, Friday at 7 pm and will close with the popular, critically-acclaimed film on the tragic, fabulous life of a transgender Filipina, Jun Robles Lana’s DIE BEAUTIFUL on October 22, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

The festival organized by the Filipino Arts & Cinema International and sponsored by the Filipino Advocates for Justice (FAJ), Film Development Council of the Philippines, The Filipino Channel (TFC) and inquirer.net, opens on October 18 with a lecture on the Secret History of Philippine Cinema by Andrew Leavold at the Bayanihan Community Center, 1010 Mission St., SF followed by Short Film competition on October 19 at the San Francisco Philippine Consulate, and the Main Competition on October 20-22 at the Roxie Theater, 3117 – 16th Street, San Francisco. The festival closes with the Trainors Training Workshop, “Promoting Cultural Literacy through Film” by Prof. Nick Deocampo at the Multi-Purpose Building, Room 140, Ocean Campus, City College of San Francisco.

The annual festival, the longest-running event in the US, has been the premier showcase of new works and Filipino film classics in the United States for the past 24 years. It is organized by FACINE, a not-for-profit media arts organization based in San Francisco that aims to advance the interests of cinemas from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora.

This year’s festival highlights include juried competition among 9 feature-length and 14 short films, a lecture on Philippine film history and a Trainors Training workshop aimed at educators, constitute FACINE’s three-year celebration of the Centenary of Filipino Cinema, 2017-2019. Community partners include SF Philippine Consulate, Philippine Studies Dept, CCSF, PAWA, FAAE, Arkipelago Books, Isomer Media, Positively Filipino, SFNewsfeeds, My Favorite Bite, Fort McKinley, International Southeast Asian Film Festival.

A wide array of new works by filmmakers from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora on varying subjects and genre will be presented in different programs.
