[PARTNER] Community Pillars Fortify Abuse Prevention Campaign
/The two community pillars will join the Philippine Consulate General and Union Bank in presenting ALLICE's 12th annual Free from Violence, an education program and resource fair 5:30-7:30 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the lobby of Seton Medical Offices Building on 1850 Sullivan Ave. in Daly City.
PBRC is a 30-year-old nonprofit that provides direct service to area residents.
Like PBRC, ALLICE aims to promote safety and self-sufficiency through grassroots education and access to public services.
"ALLICE shares PBRC's philosophy that together education and collaboration build a direct path to empowerment," Daly City Personnel Commissioner Perla Ibarrientos, chair of PBRC's executive board of directors announced the partnership Sept. 15.
"We are elated to support a worthy cause," Daly City Planning Commissioner Ray Satorre, current president of PBRC, lauded ALLICE's mission to prevent and end intimate partner and family violence through free public events staged completely by donation.
Seton Medical Center was one of the first entities to support ALLICE early in its inception, but the coming event will mark the landmark facility's premier hosting of a presentation by its longtime partner.
CEO John J. Ferrelli, Jr., will deliver the welcome address at the lobby of the medical offices building.
Ferrelli Jr. is the first head of the new administration under the Center's new ownership. This year, Verity Foundation took the reins of Daly City's first hospital, operator of the only ER open to the general population between San Francisco and Burlingame.
The emergency room often is where survivors first disclose their situations. In fact it was an ER attending physician whose empathy had earned the trust of a FilAm survivor to confide what triggered a car accident that sent her to hospital. Her testimony of her experience with two past abusive relationships will highlight the program to give a better understanding of the dynamics of abuse.
Nonprofit resource providers will give health checks and information about their free services. Consul Gen. Henry Bensurto Jr. will lead the pledge to help end family and intimate partner violence.
Highlighting the program is the presentation of the Tanging Kaakbay or Outstanding Ally Award to new Kumpare Rev. Leonard Oakes, pastor of Holy Child & St. Martin Episcopal Church, host of the team's spring elder care and elder abuse presentation and health fair.
Special honors will be conferred on Erlinda Galeon, 2007 ALLICE president, who passed away June 13. Her children Audrey Galeon -Tabuso and Andrew Galeon and their families will receive first ALLICE Kampeon Award for Kumare Erlinda's commitment to meeting the organization's goals.

"It's amazing how we have managed to continue our work purely on the generosity of kindred spirits,” said ALLICE executive director Cherie Querol Moreno, a journalist, San Mateo County Commissioner on Aging and HICAP outreach coordinator. “That's testament to the significance of the issue and the belief that our community is our responsibility. We should all take ownership because ultimately what happens to one of us affects all of us."
Individuals and leaders in diverse sectors have consistently shared resources to facilitate each ALLICE presentation emphasizing that intimate partner and family violence are not a private matter.
“Those in abusive relationships need to know they are not alone and that there is help available,” added Africa.

Philippine Nurses Association of Northern California, StarVista, County of San Mateo District Attorney’s Office, Victim Services Division, Filipino Mental Health Initiative, CORA Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse, HART Healthy Aging Response Team and HICAP Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program of San Mateo County will staff information and consultation tables.
