[PARTNER] ALLICE 11TH Annual Free From Violence: PH, U.S. Officials Unite Against Domestic Abuse
/Free and open to the public, the education event and resource fair entitled "11th Annual Free from Violence" is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the 2nd Floor Cafeteria of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center on 1200 El Camino Real in South San Francisco.
Philippine Consul General in San Francisco Henry S. Bensurto Jr. and Colma City Council Member Helen Fisicaro will deliver the keynote and call the community to action against intimate partner violence. Kaiser Permanente Physician-in-chief Dr. John Skerry will welcome attendees.
“The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco has been a proud partner of ALLICE in educating the community to promote healthier and safer family relationships. We firmly believe that communitywide efforts are necessary to prevent domestic violence and provide the much needed assistance to domestic violence survivors. I therefore join our Kkumares and Kumpares in inviting our kababayan to attend this event and learn more about domestic violence and the resources available for those who need it,” said Bensurto Jr.
At the heart of the presentation is the testimony of a survivor of intimate partner violence, who will share her experience to shed light on the dynamics of abuse, how to respond to disclosures of abuse and where to get help from trouble relationships.
The program will also highlight the contribution of collaborators who have embraced ALLICE’s mission. This year, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Daly City, will receive recognition as Tanging Kaakbay or Outstanding Allies. The church hosted the Kumares and Kumpares’ recent annual “Our Family, Our Future,” its springtime faith-focused, family-oriented presentation-health fair to prevent adult abuse.
OLM Pastor Domingo Orimaco and Knights of Columbus president Rey Go and Legion of Mary president Allen Capalla, will accept the certificates of honor. Capalla’s involvement moved her to join the Kumares and help the team fulfill its mission.
Twice-yearly events unite kindred organizations that share their resources to help fulfill a common vision of a community coming together to change attitudes and build harmony at home, at work and beyond.
The fall presentation commemorates Domestic Violence Month in the area. October being Filipino American History Month, the ALLICE event draws attention to the specific needs of FilAm survivors and the appropriate responses to it.
Representatives of Asian American Recovery Services, API Legal Outreach, California Highway Patrol, Catholic Charities, CORA, FBANC, FMHI San Mateo, FCCC, FALEO, HART, HICAP of San Mateo County, HPSM, Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center, Peninsula Family Service, Pyramid Alternatives, Rape Trauma Services, Star Vista, Victim Services, and WestBay Pilipino Multi-service Center will be present to talk to attendees about their programs to promote healthier interaction.
