"Ten Times Better" Screens in San Francisco
/Jennifer Lin’s Ten Times Better, the extraordinary story of Chinese prodigy and dance pioneer George Lee, will be screened at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, at the Delancey Street Theater as part of the San Francisco Dance Film Festival.
The film also was screened across the bay on September 29 with the Oakland Ballet to help support their new show inspired by the Chinese poems carved into the walls of the old Angel Island immigration center. There is a poignant connection between the story of Lee, a teenaged refugee from China who broke racial barriers in ballet and on Broadway, and the harsh history of the immigration station, which more often than not turned away would-be immigrants from China.
In addition to showing the film, dancers performed excerpts from the Angel Island project, and members of the community shared family stories about their immigration experiences.
When Ten Times Better premiered in New York at Lincoln Center, The New York Times hailed it as as a “dance pioneer’s amazing odyssey.” Now retired as a dancer, Lee is 89 years old and works as a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas.
