Queering Pilipinx Aesthetics: Haw, Haw, the Queerabao!
/A Groundbreaking Virtual Exhibition Presented by 8 Filipino American-Owned Artist Spaces
Curator: O.M.France Viana
October 1 - November 15, 2024
In celebration of Filipino American History Month, eight Filipino American-owned artist spaces from the Salo-Sala coast-to-coast network are proud to present a virtual exhibition, "Queering Pilipinx Aesthetics: Haw, Haw, the Queerabao!" This dynamic exhibition will explore how Filipino Americans (Fil-Ams) challenge and reimagine Pilipinx aesthetics through the lens of queerness.
This exhibition tackles profound ques<ons: How do Filipino Americans queer Pilipinx aesthetics?
How do Fil-Ams navigate the complex intersectionality of culture, race, gender, religion, and other identities that shape both their freedom and oppression? How do they challenge binary notions of gender and identity while embracing their cultural specificity? Enter the playful yet deeply significant concept of the "Queerabao," a whimsical reimagining of the carabao, an iconic Filipino beast of burden, as a symbol of queer resistance.
From October 1 to November 15, 2024, visitors can explore 62 remarkable artworks by 35 trailblazing artists in this virtual exhibition. Accessible from any of our sponsoring artist spaces, and through Instagram at @omfrancestudio, this virtual experience promises thought-provoking and transformative insights into the intersection of queerness and Pilipinx identity. Please note:
The exhibition contains mature content.
