NaFFAA Honors the Filipino American Spirit of Christmas: Family, Faith, and Service
/(Washington, D.C.)—This Christmas, the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) celebrates the rich traditions and enduring values of the Filipino American community: devotion to family, steadfast faith, and an unwavering commitment to service. As families across the country gather to exchange gifts, honor elders, and reflect on their blessings, NaFFAA also recognizes the exceptional contributions of Filipino Americans and their vital role in shaping the fabric of American society.
Officers of NaFFAA DMR (Nevada, Arizona, and Utah) welcomed outgoing NaFFAA National President Mariela Fletcher in Utah to celebrate their Christmas Party. The gathering concluded with impactful service opportunities for veterans and support for the Adopt-A-Family initiative, embodying the true spirit of the season.
A Celebration Rooted in Family and Faith
Christmas holds a special place in the hearts of Filipino Americans. More than a holiday, it is a season of profound connection—marked by traditions like Simbang Gabi, a nine-day series of pre-dawn masses, and Noche Buena, a midnight feast that brings together families and communities. These celebrations are not just expressions of festivity but sacred rituals that strengthen familial bonds, preserve cultural heritage, and reflect a deep connection to faith.
Across the United States, the Simbang Gabi tradition continues to flourish. In Los Angeles, the annual celebration began on December 15 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, highlighted by a stunning “Parade of Parols,” with vibrant Filipino Christmas lanterns representing over 120 parishes. In New York, the 36th Simbang Gabi sa Konsulado united the Filipino community at the Philippine Center, showcasing a collective spirit that bridges generations and geographies.

A Year of Historic Representation and Service
This year, Filipino Americans achieved historic milestones in public service, with over 25 leaders elected to office at the local, state, and federal levels. Among these groundbreaking achievements, Christopher Cabaldon became the first Filipino American elected to the California State Senate, while Jessica Caloza made history as the first Filipina American in the California State Assembly. Cameron Sasai’s appointment as the first Filipino American and youngest mayor of Pinole, California, exemplifies the dynamic leadership emerging from the community. These achievements underscore the growing influence of Filipino Americans and their dedication to service and advocacy, ensuring equity and compassion remain at the heart of governance.
