Kommunity Kultura: Ilokano Culture through Language

Please join Manilatown for a year-long “Kommunity Kultura” intensive on Ilokano Culture through Language!!

We will be gathering in person at the International Hotel Manilatown Center to learn about Ilokano language, culture and ancestry!

In this 12-month (once a week) course taught by Jeffrey Miguel Acido, PhD., we will

  • Reclaim and reawaken the nakem (soul-consciousness);

  • Learn basic and conversational Ilokano;

  • Learn philosophies rooted in Ilokano culture;

  • Explore our Philippine and Filipino-American history;

  • Assist in developing an Ilokano online curriculum;

  • (Optional) Travel to Nakem Conferences in the Philippines and United States Hawaii/Mainland to learn from Ilokano, Amianan and Mother-Tongue-Based and Multilingual-Educational Scholars.

In our sessions we will share stories, food, experiences and longings of what it means to be Ilokano in the diaspora.

PLEASE NOTE that this will be a year-long recurring in-person class taking place at the International Hotel Manilatown Center on Saturdays from 10am-12:30pm starting on November 5, 2022. There will be holiday breaks throughout the year and there is room for flexible scheduling. Further details will be discussed on the first day of class.

Cost: $150. The cost of attendance will cover the whole year of programming.

The class will be limited to only 25 students so we do ask that you please register for this class only if you are available for a full year of programming. A non-refundable $20 deposit will be required to hold a student’s place in the class with the remaining $130 due in full on the first day of class on Saturday, November 5th.

Jeffrey Miguel Acido, PhD in Educational Foundation

Born in the Ilocos and raised in Manila and Hawaii, Jeff received his PhD in Educational Foundation and was a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor in the Indo-Pacific Languages and Literature, Ilokano Program at the University of Hawaii Manoa from 2010-2015. Among the classes he taught were:

  • Multicultural Education

  • Community and Culture

  • Philippine Popular Culture

  • Filipino Food, Music and Ritual

  • Philippine Cultural Mapping of Hawaii

  • Philippine Diasporic Literature

Jeff also taught Diversity and Social Justice and Ethnic Studies at Seattle Central College from 2020-2021 before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. Most recently Jeff managed the Mental Health and Well-Being program of the Movember Foundation and Prevention Institute in Oakland.

Living in the diaspora Jeff became passionate about (re)claiming his Ilokano language, culture and ancestry. He sought to reclaim his connection to the Ilokano nation by studying Ilokano and immersing himself back to his hometown in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte. He hopes to grow the nakem and pride of what it means to be Ilokano in the diaspora as he and his partner Debieh raise their 3-year-old daughter Waya to grow up learning and loving to speak in Ilokano.
