The USS Hornet Museum in partnership with the Bataan Legacy Historical Society, the Friends & Family of Nisei Veterans and the USS Telesforo Trinidad Campaign are hosting the opening of a month-long exhibition in October for Filipino American History Month: 120 Years of Loyal & Faithful Service by Filipinos in the US Navy.

The exhibition will chronicle the role of Filipinos in the U.S. Navy starting in 1901, when President McKinley created the Insular Force.  Filipinos became the largest foreign-born recruits until 1992, when the Philippine Enlistment Program ended.  Today, thousands of Filipino Americans continue this proud tradition of serving in the U.S. Navy.  The centerpiece of the exhibition will be Telesforo Trinidad – a Filipino sailor who received the Medal of Honor in 1915 for his heroic actions on board the USS San Diego.  The exhibition will also feature U.S. Navy pilots saved by guerrillas and the role of the USS Hornet during WWII in the Philippines.

The opening event will feature a joint service color guard, Filipino American singers and sailors of Filipino heritage who have served in the U.S. Navy.  Filipino food will also be available for purchase.  Tickets can be purchased in advance through www.uss-hornet.org.
