“Modern Filipino Children’s Stories: Sari-Sari Storybooks” is currently live on Kickstarter, and raising funds to bring a series of bilingual children’s books to life.

Written to under-represented Philippine language groups (such as Ivatan, Cebuano, Chavacano) and translated into English, the series will promote language diversity and connect young readers to Filipino culture. The books feature stories with magical friendships, moral dilemmas, and the everyday emotional challenges that all children face. The campaign runs through Filipino-American History Month and ends November 1. It seeks to raise $21,000 to cover the printing costs of books two, three, and four in the series: “Kalipay and the Tiniest Tiktik,” “Amina and the City of Flowers,” and “Sandangaw.”

Sari-Sari Storybooks is an independent publisher of Filipino picture books for readers aged 5–8. Founded by Christina Newhard, a Brooklyn-based Filipino-American graphic designer, Sari-Sari is-sues bilingual editions (print and digital) that feature under-represented Philippine languages (such as Ivatan, Cebuano, Chavacano, Waray, Meranaw, and Aeta), showcase the work of Filipino creatives, and share the quirky magic of Filipino storytelling.

“Sari-Sari Storybooks” is a pun on the “sari-sari store,” which are variety shops found in every corner of the Philippines. They are entrepreneurial neighborhood spaces that are usually run by women.
