The best way to learn history is to read the meticulously researched, factually accurate and objective works of credible historians and writers.

The best way to appreciate historical events is to hear the personal stories by or about those who were there.

Our lineup this week offers both. It begins with a son's narration of his father's monumental choice and heroism during the 1989 coup d'etat that almost toppled the Cory Aquino administration.

We're also reposting some stories related to this day, December 8, a holy day of obligation in the Catholic world (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) but also marks the beginning of World War II in the Philippines (1941) and the assassination of John Lennon (1981) (we have 2 Beatles stories from Lloyd LaCuesta and Marra PL. Lanot).

Part 2 of  former COMELEC chair Andres Bautista's series on the Philippine electoral process, focusing on political dynasties, is also in this issue.

And for a sumptuous feast (or to trigger your imagination of one), PF Correspondent and resident foodie Elizabeth Ann Quirino describes the Kapampangan Christmas table of a clan matriarch who literally cooked up a feast, one dish of which is our Happy Home Cook feature this week.

The Philippine presidential race is heating up, with President Benigno Aquino’s endorsement of Mar Roxas as his heir apparent. Contributing writer Marites D. Vitug gives us a political situationer, "Stakes Are High in the '16 Presidential Election," that gives food for thought to all Filipino voters, wherever they may be.

The cuisine of Batangas is the focus of food expert Michaela Fenix as she regales us with savory delights that make the southern Tagalog province a necessary stop when doing a food tour of the Philippines. "Straightforward, Simple Batangas Cuisine" will make your mouth water, and it's just one of the chapters of Fenix's excellent book, Country Cooking: Philippine Regional Cuisines.

From food we shift to fabrics as writer Serina Aidasani introduces us to Art Almeida, an artist and textile designer, in "He Leaves You in Stitches." Almeida, who runs his family corporation Genknit, walks us through the intricate process of textile design, a niche market for sure, that requires not just talent, but also dedication and intuition.

In San Francisco last week, a tribute to one of the greatest Filipino writers in English, Nick Joaquin, took place. There cannot be enough ways to honor the memory of this literary great; thus, we ask you to Read Again his nephew Tony Joaquin's "My Uncle, Nick Joaquin," which we published last year.

This week's recipe in the Happy Home Cook: Marvin Gapultos' version of Sardines in Spicy Tomato Sauce, from his book The Adobo Road Cookbook: A Filipino Food Journey -- from Food Blog, to Food Truck, and Beyond. Also featured this week is Goldilocks' Taisan Loaf Cake.

Two public servants -- one on the ascendant, the other under siege. This week we cover both sides of the Pacific with ace journalist Marites Danguilan Vitug reporting on "Jojo Binay's Rough Ride" in Manila and Los Angeles-based feature writer Anthony Maddela writing about Mayor Mark Pulido, the current mayor of Cerritos, California  as the "One to Watch." The mayor claims no higher ambitions at the moment while the vice president is rarin' to go for the highest office in the land. What does the future hold for each of them? Let's keep watching.

As the holiday frenzy and balikbayan season begin in our homeland, it's good to know about serene, calming places tucked in remote corners of the archipelago where one can escape for some R&R. One such place is Bantayan Island in Cebu, and writer Excel Dyquiangco takes us there in "Bantayan Island, The Laid-Back Side of Cebu."

Meanwhile, enjoy reading again Penelope V. Flores' "Andres Bonifacio: The Other National Hero," whose 151st birth anniversary is celebrated nationwide in the Philippines on November 30.
