Our Sports Hall of Famers

It may come as a surprise to this Instagram generation familiar with the accomplishments of Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, EJ Obiena and Carlos Yulo that once upon a time, during their grandparents' and even their parents' lifetimes, the terms "Filipino" and "sports champs" were very rarely used in the same sentence.

Once in a generation, there might have been a Flash Elorde or a Eugene Torre or a Paeng Nepomuceno who dazzled with their prowess, but they were flashes-in-the-pan, so to speak -- rare occurrences. Thus, it's no surprise that in the long history of sports, only ten Filipinos so far have been recognized as Hall of Famers in their respective arenas. Our Iloilo-based contributing writer Vicente Salas introduces the "Filipino Sports Greats and Hall of Famers," a slim list that will soon expand.

Nearer to the present, Fil-Am small businesses, other than the usual karinderya, hardly made a ripple even in the Fil-Am community beyond their neighborhoods. Today, Fil-Am entrepreneurs like Raibyn Cabiling of San Diego have established a presence in both mainstream and social media, peddling such products as t-shirts, headwear and an innovative "barongorak" that invokes Filipino culture. PF Correspondent Anthony Maddela reports.

The itch to travel is universal but does it have to be done alone? PF contributing writer Ian Layugan dissects the different facets of traveling solo, and presents words of caution and the challenge of daring.

What does it take to be surrogate mother/caregiver/mentor to a chess prodigy? Lotis Key, once a star in Philippine movies and theater, found herself assuming that role and wrote about it. Read Again "A Traveling Fool." http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/a-traveling-fool

His name no longer rings a bell so PF Correspondent Myles A. Garcia reintroduced him to a new audience. Icons of Democracy

Faced with the spectre of a civilization-ending clash between freedom and autocracy being played out in Ukraine combined with the dimming memory of our own people power event 37 years ago, we pay tribute this week to two senators, each of whom is an icon of resistance against authoritarianism.

The late revered Senator Jose W. Diokno, Ka Pepe to many, is remembered not only for his brilliance in the legal arena but also for his goodness as a person by veteran journalist/editor Jo-Ann Q. Maglipon. Ka Pepe would have been 100 years old this year.

Senator Leila de Lima marked her fifth year in a military jail unrelenting in her fight for justice while fulfilling her duties as a duly elected legislator even behind bars. We asked Paulynn P. Sicam, another veteran journalist, to update us on the senator's quest for another term.

The unclarity of our homeland's future in the next six years prompted Assad Baunto, a Mëranaw economist and a politically conscious cook to make "Political Palitaw," which is a commentary, a metaphor and a recipe all at the same time. His palitaw is based on the Tausug and Yakan peoples' Putli Mandi and comes in different flavors and colors, just like our politics.

A book that should be in every Filipino's shelf is Danton Remoto's Riverrun, a novel about a young gay man growing up under a dictatorship. University of Hawaii professor Patricio Abinales reviews the acclaimed novel.

In case you haven't watched this excellent talk by journalism professor Sheila Coronel on "Marcos and Memory" that we sent out as a special issue last Monday, here again is the link: http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/marcos-and-memory

For the Happy Home Cook this week, check out Assad Baunto's instructional on making coconut-filled palitaw in his "Political Palitaw" article.

Two Women

Our webinar tonight, "We Are NOT the Virus," is a much needed conversation about the increase in verbal and physical assaults against Asian Americans, particularly the elderly, since the pandemic started. While not all of these can be considered hate crimes legally (apparently there is a higher legal threshold for a hate crime, which will also be discussed tonight), Asians including Filipino Americans know that in these days of careless rhetoric, one doesn't have to dig deep to find race in any aggressive act. Find out what you can do to protect yourself. Sign up to join.

For those who missed last week's fascinating webinar "An Open Door: Holocaust Haven in the Philippines", here's the recording, which includes the movie trailer.

In this issue, we shine a light on the remarkable Fil-Ams appointed to significant positions in the Biden administration, four of which are women.

Likewise, PF Correspondent Criselda Yabes, reporting from Manila, gives us an update on recent case victories of two women who the Philippine president condemn as thorns on his side: Vice President Leni Robredo and detained Senator Leila de Lima.

From Germany, Filipino German filmmaker Divina Kuan marks her presence in the indie film category with her short film, "The Manicurists."

Happy Women's History Month to all the Filipino women who are making history.
